A comfortable gîte in an exceptional location
Welcome to our unusual accommodation for two, nestled in the heart of a medieval tower at Saint-Germain-en-Coglès in Brittany's beautiful Fougères region. Immerse yourself in an atypical and unforgettable experience, where history and modern comfort come together to offer you a vacation or weekend out of the ordinary.

Accommodation
The tower is a 33 m² house on three levels.
You'll enjoy a bright room with a 140 cm bed, a desk, a small sitting area and a touch of curiosity cabinet-style decoration.
The kitchen and dining levels (stove, table and chairs...) are more in keeping with the house's medieval origins.
The lower level features a shower room reminiscent of early twentieth-century sea bathing and a laundry area.
There's a 200 m² private garden with terrace and furniture, plus two parking spaces.
Equipment and services, three-star comfort

The three-star rating from the French Ministry of Tourism guarantees a high level of services and facilities to ensure your comfort. The tower is well heated in winter and stays cooler than most houses in summer.
Equipment list: Fibre optic Wifi, television with TNT, garden with terrace and furniture, private parking, washing machine, espresso machine, electric kettle, toaster, stove, microwave, board games, books, sheets and towels, soap-shampoo and hairdryer...
During your stay, you can call on Océ'Anne, our in-home beautician, for a beauty treatment or relaxing pampering.
For stays booked via AirBnB, you will benefit from a concierge service provided by Mélanie.

The environment, the surroundings
You'll be located in the heart of the village, with shops within easy walking distance (bar-tobac, mini-market, bakery, etc.), as well as in the immediate vicinity of the forest and public gardens for your first strolls.

A littlehistory
Records show that the estate dates back at least to the 14th century. The tower in which the gîte is located protected the entrance, along with a second tower, now lost. The whole property was apparently surrounded by a wall, "Carrée" meaning "enclosed place". It was a wealthy estate with, in particular, a chapel and a dovecote, privileges of seigneurial estates.
The property belonged to the le Fourmerie family in the early 15th century. Then, through marriages and inheritance, it passed into the hands of two other families, before returning to the du Pontavice family in the mid-17th century. Then, at the very beginning of the 20th century, my great-grandfather bought the property to exploit the woods, which are now communal.
The manor house remembered by the Germans was built in the late 16th century. It was already partly in ruins in the 19th century and disappeared in the second half of the 20th century. What remains of Château de la Carrée are the former agricultural outbuildings, including an old bakery, part of the enclosure and the tower.
This tower was my grandparents' holiday home, before serving as a refuge for them after their house was destroyed in a bombing raid during the liberation of Fougères in 1944. Then, for a time, it was my father's home. After years of long-term rental, the tower was converted into a gîte in 2024.
Each generation has contributed to the preservation and improvement of the tower, transforming this defensive element into a comfortable home that is now available for rent.

AirBnB, Abritel or Booking?
We offer our gite via platforms for reasons of organization, convenience and also to ensure payment security. We do not take direct bookings.
If you don't have a particular preference for one platform or another, here are a few points to help you make your choice:
AirBnB will generally offer more flexible booking conditions (shorter stays, more freedom for cancellations). What's more, you benefit from the concierge services of Mélanie, my co-host.
Abritel is often cheaper for stays of a week or more.
Booking offers a loyalty program. There are often discounted dates or reductions, as in the case of non-refundable stays, for example.
Sometimes, certain dates or lengths of stay are available on one platform but not on the other. What's more, different rates may be offered. We invite you to compare to find the offer best suited to your needs.
A few warnings
As the stairs are narrow, the apartment is not designed to accommodate people with reduced mobility.
There are two flights of stairs down from the bedroom to the toilet.
The church is close by, and you can hear the bells even at night (although previous travelers tell me they haven't been bothered).
In addition to parties, all types of fires, barbecues, etc. are prohibited.
We've chosen not to use chemicals, and it's in the countryside. So it's not impossible to find insects (winged ants in a swarm, for example). All cleaning is carried out using natural products.
Although recently renovated, (electricity, plumbing, insulation, heating, decoration...), the apartment is in a very old building. What's more, it's small. So it may not appear as bright or functional as a new home. But everything has been done to ensure the best possible comfort.
Although this tower and part of the outbuildings remain, there is no longer a château as such.
